VLSI: VS23S040 – 4 Mbit Versatile SPI / 8-Bit Parallel Bus SRAM

VLSI Solution announces availability of VS23S040, a versatile SPI SRAM device with the largest capacity on the market.

VLSI Solution's VS23S040 is an easy to use four megabit static RAM device. The memory can be accessed via a standard SPI compatible serial bus (1, 2 and 4-bit modes), or via an 8080- type 8-bit parallel bus similar to nand flash devices.

One of the main applications for VS23S040 is using it as an audio buffer for audio recording applications. Especially recording non-compressed, high sample rate audio formats to SD cards using a microcontroller benefits from a large buffer memory. Other applications include microcontroller RAM extension and internet streaming applications.

In addition to pure memory storage VS23S040 also contains programmable composite video and general signal generators. Using this feature VS23S040 can generate up to 4 NTSC or PAL composite video outputs, one RGB output, or up to 4 signal patterns.

VS23S040 is operated from a single voltage with an extremely flexible voltage range from 1.5V up to 3.6V. This feature together with the standard 4-wire SPI interface and an industrial temperature range (- 40 ... +85°C) makes the device both reliable and easy to use for any application requiring additional RAM.

The SPI interface supports single, dual and quad I/O. All of these I/O modes can further support byte-based or sequential byte transfer modes. SPI operation is fast: in quad mode the whole 524,288 x 8-bit memory can be written in 1,048,591 SPI clock cycles. Using the maximum 36MHz SPI clock speed the write time of the entire memory is less than 29.2ms.

VS23S040 is offered in a small, RoHS compatible 5x5mm BGA24 package.
